Tracks of the Week (001)

Beabadoobee - 'Sun Has Set'
'Sun Has Set' has been playing all over the radio waves. The intro of the grungy guitars makes it feel like this track got dropped out of the early naughties, or even the 90s. Giving big Hole vibes, and as the track progresses into the verse, the Hole influence feels very real. The chaotic verse really sets the bed for the whole tune, which is why it just reminds me of 'Celebrity Skin' by Hole. But as soon as the chorus arrives, Beabadoobee has really made this her own - literally, the 'Sun Has Set'. Then, as we arrive back into that verse, you will just catch your head banging. It's been ages since I've felt this fucking connected to new music. The track is only a couple minutes long and I've reloaded it multiple times.
Serious reload value. Album out 18th September.

Cage the Elephant - 'Beaches in Tennessee'
Shout out my boy Ewan, he was always on Cage the Elephant. I'll be real, it didn't connect back then. But since 'Beaches in Tennessee' has been released, I now can feel the love Ewan had for Cage the Elephant. Sometimes you need the sound to choose you, rather than choosing the sound - this single has everything. I'm pretty sure this is part of a new album release for Cage the Elephant and I can't wait for more. For me, the intro reminds me of the early naughties again, UK though - giving Kasabian vibes with the tight rhythm section and simple melody lines in the verse. Then the muted guitars become unmuted and distorted, giving it a bluesy rock feel, accompanied by Matt's lyrics filling the whole groove - each bar giving the tune such a 'push' feel.
Cold.

Jordan Rakei - 'Promise'
He is back! Shout out JRakz every time. This one hits the spot. Recorded during his residency at Abbey Road Studios, this one goes straight into the tune immediately - stripped back with keys, vocals, and a tight drum groove. Jordan Rakei's sound is truly beautiful, from instrumentation to his immense vocal range, distinguishable to a T. The keys give neo-soul vibes, so by the time we're in the chorus and the acoustic guitar comes in with the beautiful BVs, we're now deep in Rakei territory. As we reach the end of the summer, this is a song for an autumnal walk on the beach.
Can't wait for the new album, out 30th October.
